From the beginning, I was sort of expecting the split-personality trope that Memento and Fight Club effectively piloted into the mainstream. Since, I've seen probably a dozen movies which incorporate this twist, including the film Bale starred in a year before this one. (I'll give Shutter Island a pass because it did have a lot of other twists too). But Nolan wouldn't do this... Would he? Thankfully he didn't!
I was relieved when I found out that. Even the more mundane plot twist of Borden was refreshing. As said early on in the movie, the truth is hidden in plain sight, and this may be an example of the viewer's fantasies running wild. Of course the implications of is a much more complicated matter, and it doesn't automatically solve every conflict the viewer finds out about it.
