Having watched the film, I would like to think the R rating could have been avoidable but the grey character shades which Oppenheimer had, I feel the movie is much better off with an R rating. The movie is very very dense though, relentlessly cut with myriad of characters. Being someone who isn’t completely well versed with the US politics during WW2, I found a few things tough to follow through. It’s definitely Nolan’s most experimental and unlike anything I have seen from him.

And just to say––Ehrlich is an excellent critic, and he's not "desperate for attention." Perhaps we should be more patient and thoughtful than trivializing and criticizing every other negative reaction.
Oppenheimer is a lot of movie, one that blends multiple genres within an epic historical drama. I'm not at all surprised that some of this works better for some than others based on preference and taste.
